TSA's contribution to greening the environment
TSA fully supports the Group’s ambition to become the Responsible Energy Major.
Participants in the initiative
As a sign of our commitment to greening the environment and contributing towards the Million Trees campaign, several interventions took place during Arbor month, in which various employees at Head Office and across the country participated.
1 September 2017: Total kicks off Arbor Week by partnering with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for Arbor Day celebrations at North End Stadium - Matatiele, Eastern Cape.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), in partnership with Total, celebrated National Arbor day on 1 September 2017 in Matatiele. The celebrations also served as a launch of the 2017 National Arbor Week - this is an annual initiative which runs from 1 – 7 September with the purpose of recognizing and encouraging awareness of the need to protect and plant indigenous trees. This year’s theme was “Forests and Water” to emphasise the planting of indigenous trees which conserve water. DAFF selected the Buffalo Thorn and Ebony Trees as trees of the year.
In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister Senzeni Zokwana challenged each of the community members present at the launch to plant at least one tree during their lifetime. Part of the day’s proceedings included the Arbor City Awards - these awards were introduced to promote greening of cities and towns in South Africa. The awards were conferred to municipalities who demonstrate going an extra mile in greening their areas of jurisdiction. The competition has three categories namely Metropolitan, Local and Rural Municipalities. The Local Municipality category was won by Stellenbosch Local Municipality and Tshwane Metro took the Metropolitan award - both these awards were sponsored by Total. DAFF sponsored the Rural Municipality award which was won by the Umzimvubu Municipality.
The Arbor Day Launch kick-started a series of events which were to be rolled-out throughout the month of September.
1 - 7 September 2017: Total celebrates National Arbor Week by giving away seedlings for indigenous trees and plants at various Total Service Stations nationally.
Back at home, Total Regional Sales Managers and their teams distributed a total of 20 000 seedlings at service stations during Arbor Week. Each Regional Sales Manager received 5 000 seedlings and on average a total of 3 000 seedlings were distributed per day across the various service stations. Service stations were specially chosen in townships and other locations where more awareness of planting trees and greening the environment is required.
27 September 2017: Distribution of Trees at Total Head Office
The second internal Total initiative in celebration of Arbor month was the distribution of trees to the staff at Total Head Office. 50 indigenous trees and 50 fruit trees were given away to the first 100 staff who claimed them! The trees were distributed so that staff could also be involved in the Million Trees Campaign during Arbor Month by planting a tree in their own homes.
The participation shown by Total staff was impressive and the initiative was indeed a success!
29 September 2017: Tree ploanting and clean-up campaign at Zola Eco Park, Soweto
As the grand finale to Total’s celebrations of Arbor month, 400 trees, as well as compost and aqua gel (which aids in reducing water requirements of the trees once planted),were donated to Johannesburg City Parks. Thirteen (13) volunteers from Total attended the tree-planting event which was combined with the Johannesburg City Executive Mayor’s “A Re Sebetseng” clean-up campaign at Zola Eco Park, Soweto. Mayor Herman Mashaba encouraged the Zola Community to take responsibility for cleaning up their communities and planting trees. After the clean-up with the Mayor, 400 indigenous and fruit trees were distributed to the Zola communities to plant at their homes.
Other partners present were Joburg Zoo and Pikitup.
This year was our first initiative in having employees actively participating during Arbor month. Next year we hope to make it better and involve TSA employees across ALL of our regions.
