Total South Africa upskills talented youth through its Young Graduate Development Program

Johannesburg, March 11, 2015 – As part of Total South Africa’s mandate to make a meaningful difference to reduce unemployment amongst graduates, Total South Africa in partnership with Total group recently selected four graduates who were part of Total South Africa’s internship programme to participate in its Young Graduate Development Program.

The program will see the four selected graduates travel to neighbouring African countries such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya  to gain valuable knowledge and experience across the African continent. Total South Africa will in turn host five graduates from selected African countries such as Kenya, Zambia, Uganda and Malawi at their own offices to ensure a shared skills exchange opportunity across the region.

“These young, aspiring graduates were selected because they have consistently demonstrated exceptional performance during the internship programme and a desire to succeed in their professional careers,“ explains, Total South Africa CEO and Managing Director, Mr Christian des Closières.

The Young Graduate Development Programme was founded by the Total group in April 2014 to provide young graduates with an opportunity to gain hands on practical and professional experience, an insight into how an international company operates and to learn more about Total’s business operations at Total’s offices situated in neighbouring countries across Africa. During the 18 month tenure, the exchange graduates are hired on short-term contracts and receive training in finance, business or operations for six months at a Total subsidiary in Africa or the Middle East.

“A better-equipped graduate in terms of education does not necessarily mean that the individual will automatically gain employment. The aim of the Young Graduate Development Program is to provide practical skills and on the job training while contributing significantly towards bridging the gap between skills acquired university and skills needed to excel in the workplace,” adds des Closières.

During the duration of the program, each graduate’s performance is individually assessed and should they meet the required standards, they are then sent to another Total subsidiary in the same region where they work for a period of 12 months. This way the Total group is able to ensure that each of the countries in Africa and the Middle East in which it operates is able to benefit from the expertise and experience that these young recruits have acquired in their own countries. 

To date, the Total Young Graduate Program has selected more than 100 talented young graduates from across the globe to join one of the Group's subsidiaries in Africa and the Middle East and by 2017 approximately 500 graduates will have benefited from the mentorship and the work experience gained from this valuable professional opportunity.
