Total South Africa announces Siyabulela Xuza as Energy Ambassador

27 March 2015: Total South Africa today announced that young South African rocket scientist Siyabulela Xuza has been named as its new Energy Ambassador.

Xuza shot to international fame after developing a new form of rocket fuel that impressed MIT so much they named a minor planet after him. “He is a remarkable young South African,” says Dr Jerry Gule, General Manager, Marketing Service Competency Centre at Total South Africa. “His story of experimenting with rocket fuels in his mother’s kitchen at a young age, ultimately resulting in him presenting his project to international dignitaries like Michelle Obama and the King and Queen of Sweden, is something that we, as a nation, can be incredibly proud of. His down-to-earth attitude, hard work ethic and gentle nature, as well as the willingness to succeed and pass on his success to others, are all something we can aspire to.”

As a leader in energy services in Africa, Total has committed itself to supplying better, cleaner and more useful energy solutions to all Africans, while supporting innovation in the energy sector and creating a better future for the continent’s youth; issues that Xuza himself is very passionate about.

“Total and Siya share very similar views and values on energy, innovation and the youth of this country,” continues Dr. Gule. “So when we decided to launch our Energy Ambassador Programme, it made perfect sense to kick start the initiative with him at the helm and we look forward to a fantastic year together.”

This sense of collaboration is something that is echoed by Xuza who is also the youngest member of the African Union-affiliated Africa 2.0 energy advisory panel, “We are on the same page,” he says. “Innovation, commitment to sustainable energy and the future of all Africans are issues that are all close to my heart and I am thrilled a company like Total South Africa supports these as well. I look forward to sharing my journey with others through my collaboration with Total South Africa.”

Siya will be travelling around the continent over the next few months giving inspiring and energetic talks to students about his amazing journey from Mthatha to being one of the brightest lights in the future of Africa’s energy sector.
