Mandela Month Celebrations

Mandela Day 2016

Total South Africa, in partnership with Afrika Tikkun, an NGO that has been working with disadvantaged children and families for the past 20 years, recently staged a talent show for children who are part of the Afrika Tikkun program to celebrate Mandela month. The show took place at the BidVest Wonderers stadium in Ilovo, Johannesburg where various sporting codes and activities were showcased by highly charged and enthusiastic children.

The event was used by Total as an Employee Voluntary Programme to inspire staff members to celebrate Mandela month.  Indeed Total staff came out in full support of the Afrika Tikkun Talent Show and  interacted with the children in various activities that were organized throughout the day.    There was also plenty of entertainment with local musicians performing during the show.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.  It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine of the significance of the life we lead”.

The involvement of Total staff is all summed up in the above quote, says Nyameka Makonya, Sustainable Development Manager.  Mandela Day has become a global action to celebrate Madiba’s legacy and gives each individual an opportunity to transform the world to a better place.”

Total staff initiated a blanket knitting initiative a month prior to the Talent Show event and we are proud to announce that a total of 200 blankets were donated to the children on Mandela Day.

According to Afrika Tikkun, Mandela month is a demonstration of the power of partnership across private, public and civil society and what can be achieved when those sectors work together towards the common good of this nation. As long as people are willing to work together – there is hope for South Africa’s economy and of Afrika Tikkun reaching its goal to support the economic freedom of young people.

Afrika Tikkun’s vision is dedicated to investing in education, health and social services for children, youth and their families through its community Centres of Excellence and strategic partnerships. For more on Afrika Tikkun visit:  www. afrikatikkun.org
