Simphiwe, Bursary Recipient

About Total South Africa’s bursary programme

The Total South Africa’s bursary programme targets the children of Total South Africa’s service station staff who wouldn’t ordinarily have the financial means to provide their children with a tertiary education. At least one of the parents must have worked at a Total South Africa service station for a minimum of four years.

Pheneas Makama, awarded a bursary for his daughter’s education

Pheneas Makama, the proud father of Simphiwe was a long service forecourt attendant at the Total Brakpan service station in the East Rand, Johannesburg since 2006. Pheneas role involved providing excellent customer service by assisting Total Brakpan service station customers with filling their fuel tanks. He was a dedicated and hardworking employee.

While working as a forecourt attendant he heard that Total South Africa was offering bursaries to children of long service employees at Total service stations. He made the most of Total South Africa’s Bursary Programme when he applied for his daughter to receive a bursary to study teaching.  Simphiwe completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education at the University of Pretoria in 2013 and applied for an internship position as a teacher at Edleen Primary School in Kempton Park where she has taught grade 1 and 4 for the past 17 months.

Realising his dreams for his daughter

“As a young boy I had dreams of being great, of doing great things with my life. For me, that just wasn’t possible due to financial constraints. When I became a father, my dreams were for my children to be more and to do more with their life. Thanks to the bursary awarded by Total, my daughter is living her dream. Simphiwe is a qualified teacher and the first university graduate in our family,” shares Pheneas Makama.
